Embracing Caregivers: How Caring for Caregivers Ministry Offers Support

The Congregational Care ministry, Caring for Caregivers, nurtures families as they navigate the challenges of caregiving and aging. This support group meets monthly and is led by Pastor Amy Martinell and Faith Community Nurse, Jessica Kruse. The stories of Joleen Hessman, Gina Glasoe, and Julie Larson, all active participants in this ministry, echo the profound impact it has on their lives.

Founding Connections Joleen Hessman’s journey with Gloria Dei spans back to its inception in 1985. With a small group of friends, she became a charter member of the congregation. Over the years, she has witnessed the church’s evolution through various building projects and community initiatives. Drawing from her experiences as a medical professional and caregiver, Joleen recognized the need for a support group to assist those caring for aging parents. Her commitment led to the creation of the Caring for Caregivers ministry support group—a space where caregivers could share experiences, voice concerns, and uplift each other.

Filling the Gap Gina Glasoe’s connection to the ministry is equally sincere. As a speech therapist specializing in geriatrics, Gina recognized the challenges caregivers face while supporting loved ones with memory issues. Inspired by her personal experience caring for her parents, Gina teamed up with Joleen to establish the support group. This group provides caregivers with a supportive environment, where they can find solace, share their journeys, and gain insights into the spiritual aspects of caregiving.

A Place to Belong Having moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to family, Julie Larson’s discovery of Gloria Dei was transformative. From her first visit, the congregation’s warmth and shared values resonated deeply. Engaging with choir and Bible study groups, Julie found herself embraced by a community that nurtured her faith and provided cherished friendships. Julie became a caregiver when her husband was diagnosed with early-onset dementia.   By attending Caring for Caregivers, Julie found a supportive community that is rooted in faith and prayer and a place to share her story and bring her questions.

A Nurturing Haven The impact of Caring for Caregivers is profound. Gina Glasoe notes the strength of the consistent members who attend, forming a close-knit community of support. The group’s reach extends beyond the church walls, embracing individuals from outside the congregation. Joleen Hessman’s vision to address a gap in caregiving support demonstrates how faith can inspire action to serve those in need.

A Continual Journey The journey of these individuals within the Caring for Caregivers ministry exemplifies the church’s commitment to nurturing its members holistically. By recognizing the diverse challenges families face and responding with compassion, Gloria Dei has created a space where faith and community intersect to provide solace and strength.

As the ministry grows and touches more lives, its impact ripples outward, reinforcing Gloria Dei’s role as a pillar of support for families in Sioux Falls.

As we look ahead to 2024, we invite you to consider your level of giving. At Gloria Dei, we believe that everyone plays a crucial part in our community. Faith Matters.
