The Gloria Dei Adult Choir, a vibrant symphony of voices within the Gloria Dei congregation, stands as a living testimony to the power of music in worship. As we delve into the narratives of Jon Sogn, Nikki Tota, and Judy Bauer—each a distinct voice within the choir—we uncover the heartwarming stories that paint a collective portrait of faith, fellowship, and musical devotion.
A Chorus of Voices, United in Purpose
Judy Bauer’s journey into the Gloria Dei Choir reflects the choir’s welcoming embrace. “I was not sure if I could sing well enough,” Judy recalls, reflecting on her initial doubts. Yet, the choir’s warmth and camaraderie quickly dispelled those concerns. “It’s more about the song and the message,” she shares, emphasizing the profound connection the choir’s members have through their shared worship. With a blend of musical backgrounds, the choir becomes a tapestry of voices woven together in faith.
Shared Moments of Inspiration
Jon Sogn’s journey with the choir began in the early ’90s when he and his family joined the congregation. The choir was a natural choice for involvement. He fondly recalls his initial years within the choir, where the shared melodies and harmonies of faith became an integral part of his worship experience. For six to eight years, Jon’s voice resonated alongside fellow choir members until life’s demands led him to step away. The demands of raising young children and navigating a busy life prompted his hiatus from the choir. However, his love of God, combined with his love of music, and the memory of a cherished friend would lead Jon back to singing in the choir.
Jim, a beloved friend and dedicated member of the choir, was an anchor within the ensemble. Tragically, Jim’s battle with cancer became terminal. Amidst all of this, Jon wanted to stand beside his friend and sing once more. “I wanted to sing with Jim again before he passed away,” Jon said. This poignant longing sparked Jon’s return to the choir, ushering in a period of profound significance in both his faith and musical journey as he continues to join his voice with so many others, singing and praising God.
A Rekindling of a Love and Passion for Singing
Nikki Tota’s journey, on the other hand, is a recent addition, reigniting her love for choral singing. “It fills my soul,” Nikki exclaims, illustrating the choir’s role as a sanctuary amidst the busy currents of life. After years of being away from choral singing, Nikki felt a pull to rekindle her love for it. The choir at Gloria Dei presented an opportunity for her to breathe life into her passion once again.
A Symphony of Faith and Fellowship
Judy attests to the unique bonds that form within the choir, a space where “all generations” unite in harmony. The choir not only ignites friendships but becomes a platform for shared spiritual growth. Nikki’s experience echoes this sentiment as she discovers solace and camaraderie among choir members, sharing personal stories and support through life’s journey.
Notes of Faith Elevating Worship
For Jon, Nikki, and Judy, the Gloria Dei Choir is more than a musical entity—it’s a conduit for faith enrichment. The choir’s repertoire becomes an avenue to explore deeper spiritual dimensions. “Music touches your soul in ways that sometimes words can’t always get to,” Nikki affirms, highlighting the profound emotional connection that music forges.
Uniting Voices, Transforming Hearts
As the Gloria Dei Choir continues to raise its unified voice in song, we all are blessed by the music, which so often comes directly from God’s word. From Jon’s return to Nikki’s fresh perspective and Judy’s heartwarming journey, the choir remains a vital and important part of the worship life at Gloria Dei.
All singers from high school through adults are welcome in the choir at Gloria Dei, which meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and is directed by Matt Walicke, Director of Worship Arts.
