Transforming Lives through Dignity: Community Outreach in Action

In the heart of Sioux Falls, a transformative and compassionate ministry is making its mark, embodying the very essence of Gloria Dei’s commitment to spreading compassion and the good news of Jesus. “Haircuts on the Go,” an outreach program founded by lay leaders at Gloria Dei, is on pace to provide approximately 300 haircuts this summer to individuals in need, seeking to make a lasting impact by extending dignity and care, one haircut at a time.

Gloria Dei’s Mission and Outreach team echoes the core values of this ministry. The roots of Gloria Dei trace back to a deliberate effort to extend their reach into new and burgeoning areas of Sioux Falls with the message of Jesus. This purpose is deeply ingrained in the DNA of the church, aligning with the call of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

Jesus’ directive emphasizes the importance of action and engagement. This sentiment resonates both within and outside the walls of Gloria Dei, where the congregation’s mission is summarized as “Freed by Christ we Gather, Grow, Give, and GO all to the glory of God.” The significance of this mission radiates through various initiatives, including “Haircuts on the Go.”

Clayton Hedman elaborated on the inspiration for “Haircuts on the Go”, explaining, “We wanted to find a way to meet people where they are, both physically and emotionally. A simple haircut can have a powerful impact on someone’s confidence and well-being.” Peggy Hedman emphasized the ministry’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Our goal is to create an atmosphere of dignity and care for everyone we serve.”

Sue Page, an essential member of the ministry, highlighted its significance, expressing, “To provide a service that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible is such a blessing. It’s an experience that brings joy to both those we serve and those who are part of the ministry.” With each haircut, Haircuts on the Go is not only transforming appearances but also nurturing a sense of self-worth and connection within the community.

As Haircuts on the Go continues to flourish in Sioux Falls, the dedication of its volunteers and the impact of their work exemplify the enduring power of compassion. The ministry’s mission is aligned with Gloria Dei’s core values, embodying the essence of their commitment to the community and the message of Jesus. In every snip of a scissor and every smile exchanged, the spirit of “going” and making a difference echoes throughout the heart of both the ministry and the church.
