In the heart of a community lies the power of making connections and building friendships. The Gloria Dei Golf Scramble, an event that brings church members together for a day of outdoor activity and camaraderie, exemplifies the significance of church friends in fostering a sense of belonging and deepening one’s faith journey.
For Stan Hanson, a member of Gloria Dei, the journey of making friends at church began when he moved to the area in early 2022. Seeking to integrate into the local community, Stan was recommended to check out Gloria Dei by a pastor from his previous Lutheran church. Little did he know that the decision to participate in the Golf Scramble would be the catalyst for meaningful connections.
“The Golf Scramble was the perfect opportunity for me to get involved and meet people,” Stan shares enthusiastically. “It was a morning filled with outdoor fun and a chance to have relaxed conversations in between shots, allowing us to learn more about each other’s backgrounds and interests.”
This event helps to build connections within the church community. Stan recalls that on his first scramble, he found himself in a foursome with Pastor Tim, sharing laughter, conversation, and a common love for golf. The experience was invaluable, sparking a desire in Stan to become an active member of Gloria Dei, joining officially in September 2022.
Beyond the golf course, these connections extend into various aspects of church life. Stan shares how friendships formed during the Golf Scramble led him to join the Adult Men’s Bible Study and various musical ensembles like the adult choir and worship band guitar ensemble. “Having church friends motivated me to explore new activities and ministries within the church. It’s a snowball effect that keeps on growing,” he adds.
When questioned about the significance of church friends in one’s faith journey, Stan’s response was powerful. “Having church friends provides a sense of belonging to a group of people who share the same convictions and beliefs. It gives you a solid support system, especially if you are new to an area or going through difficult times.”
For Stan, the impact of church friendships goes far beyond surface-level connections. “It’s about walking together, growing in faith, and knowing that you’re not alone on your journey. It’s a testament to the power of community in nurturing one’s spirituality,” he shares warmly.
As Gloria Dei continues to organize the Golf Scramble and other events like weekly pickleball and outreach programs, the stories of friendships formed, and lives touched will undoubtedly keep unfolding. The bonds created through these activities reflect the essence of a church community that cares for its members and encourages fellowship and spiritual growth.
So, the next time you find yourself on a golf course or participating in any church event, know that you could be standing next to a new friend. As Stan Hanson’s story illustrates, when friendships are made at church, lives are enriched and faith journeys are strengthened.
