Palm Sunday and Holy Week

Hello Gloria Dei,

As we move through Holy Week as a congregation, we are privileged once again to share in the events of the greatest story ever told. Some say these events are pure myth. It sounds good that Jesus was raised to new life on Easter, but many find it hard to believe. The disciples and early followers of Jesus who participated in, and witnessed these events, initially found it hard to believe as well. It isn’t rational to believe that someone who dies on a cross will rise to new life.

Yet, the women at the tomb were clear. So were the disciples when Jesus appeared to them. So were the many others who witnessed both Jesus’ death and who saw him after the resurrection. And the four gospel writers are all clear about it too. This isn’t just a myth. Jesus truly did live, die, and rise. It is true. It is fact. And being true, it is the most important event in all of history. You are invited to give praise and honor to God as we once again experience the events of Holy Week within our worship services.

This weekend is Palm Sunday. During worship we will wave palms and sing Hosanna to our King and Messiah, Jesus. Jesus enters Jerusalem to the waving of palms and expectations of a conquering king. Jesus is a king, but he rules in a different way than expected. He gives his life for the world. He is a servant king and a conqueror, but what he conquers is not Rome or any earthly kingdom. Rather he conquers the powers of sin and death.

On Thursday we share in Jesus’ last supper, as he models for us what it means to be true servants.

On Friday we experience Jesus on the cross and the sharing of his seven last words.

And then on Saturday and Sunday we celebrate the best news ever: “Christ is Risen. He is Risen Indeed.”
