This coming Monday we celebrate Labor Day, a day to thank all those who have labored to better our society and communities. It also marks the ending of one season and the beginning of another. Maybe not the actual season change, but a turn towards fall, school being back in session, and a different pace of life again. This weekend is a rest from Labor before the next season starts.
Rest is important. God calls us to have intentional sabbath. A day of rest. In the Jewish tradition of Shabot (sabbath) they focus on their relationship with God and with others. When I was in Israel, I learned so much about what Shabot was about and how intentional it is meant to be. They plan their day ahead of time. They spend it with family and their community. It is beautiful. Sometimes I think of the Sabbath as another day to get more done after church. I have been trying really hard to remember the importance of why God calls us to rest and that we are created to be in connection with God and with those around us.
I pray that not only this weekend, but every week, you are able to find sabbath. A day away from labor and work. An intentional day to focus on your relationship with the one who made you and sustains you, also intentional time with those who you call family and friends.
This weekend in church we will be digging into Luke 14:1,7-14. Jesus is sharing a meal at the house of a prominent Pharisee. Once again, Jesus is shaking things up and reminding us of who is really welcome at the table. Spoiler alert, the table is big enough for all!
See you in church!
