A Boundary Waters Storm

Dear Gloria Dei,

I hope your summer has brought moments of rest, joy, and time with people you love. This season often draws us toward the water, where we can slow down and notice God’s creation. Yet even a peaceful lake can change quickly when the wind rises. That contrast gives us a meaningful picture of faith.

This summer, our preaching series is called “Summer at the Lake.” Lakes can be places of beauty, laughter, and deep peace. They can also remind us how quickly life can move beyond our control. In those uncertain moments, faith does not promise that we will never be afraid. Faith assures us that we do not face the wind and waves alone.

One summer, I joined a group of pastors for a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. We had spent a peaceful day paddling across clear lakes and talking about faith, ministry, and life. As we crossed one final stretch of open water, dark clouds gathered, the wind rose, and our canoes began to rock. I tightened my grip on the paddle and wondered whether I had the strength to keep going.

The storm did not stop right away, and none of us could control the waves. One pastor called out, “Keep your eyes on the canoe ahead, listen for one another, and take one stroke at a time.” We found a steady rhythm, encouraged each other across the water, and helped guide any canoe that drifted off course. At last, we reached the shelter of the shoreline and gathered together in gratitude. I learned again that courage is not the absence of fear; it is trusting Christ and the people who stay beside us.

Like our group of pastors in the Boundary Waters, we all face storms that leave us uncertain or overwhelmed. This weekend, we’ll hear the story of Peter and Jesus on the water, in a wind storm. I encourage you to read Matthew 14:22-33 in preparation for worship.

This summer, may we keep our eyes on Jesus and paddle together in hope at Gloria Dei.

See you at church!
Pastor Chris
