Words Matter

Hello Gloria Dei,

In our worship life together we are currently in a four-week series covering the book of Acts. Last week Pastor Chris preached on Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. There are many words that describe the work of the Holy Spirit; words like comforter, advocate, and friend.

Today I’d like you to think of the word “Encourager” to describe the Holy Spirit’s work. The Holy Spirit encourages us in our faith walk, leading us to trust in God above all else. The Holy Spirit encourages us and reminds us that we are the very children of God. The Holy Spirit also empowers us to be encouragers of others.

Marriage counselors say that when arguing with a spouse there are two phrases to avoid: “You Always” and “You Never”. As in “You always criticize me” or “You never listen to me.” Marriage counselors rightly tell us that we shouldn’t use our words as weapons.

The Holy Spirit as encourager enables us to speak words of encouragement to others. The words we use have tremendous power in the lives of those around us. Imagine for a minute that you are sitting across from me at my desk. I’m saying to you: “You are brave. You are kind. You are valued. You are gifted. You are a child of God. You are loved.” Now, don’t just hear me saying those words. Rather, hear God saying them. God loves you and values you.

During these summer months make it a habit starting today: Find someone and tell them something wonderful and encouraging. Use your words to build up others. They will be blessed by this. And so will you.

Please keep the South Dakota synod and all of its many ministries in your prayers as we gather in assembly Friday and Saturday of this week.

For this weekend in worship please read Acts, chapters 7 to 14.

See you in worship,

Pastor Tim
