Old Testament Characters: Miriam

Hello Gloria Dei,

Much of the time within worship our preaching texts and themes are based on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, as told to us by the four gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Jesus is our Savior and Lord. He is the way, the truth, and the life. In him we have our salvation. And so it is vital to get to know Jesus and the events of his life.

However, I’m excited to let you know that over the next month we’ll be looking at some of the different characters of the Old Testament. Just as in a family it is important to get to know those who came before us and to hear their stories, so it is within the family of faith.

The story of Jesus really begins in the Old Testament, as God promised a Savior long ago who would teach his people the true ways of God’s kingdom and would ultimately set his people free from sin, death, and the power of evil. The whole Old Testament points to the coming of a Savior. As such, it is vital for us to know the story of the Old Testament and to get to know those God used in powerful and miraculous ways.

This coming weekend our focus will be on a woman named Miriam. Miriam is the sister of Moses and Aaron. As we learn more about Miriam from the pages of Scripture, we discover that she was a woman of strength, creativity, and influence. She was a servant leader who was extremely vital within God’s plan to free his people from slavery in Egypt and to bring them to the Promised Land as told in the book of Exodus.

I invite you to read a short passage about Miriam as found in Exodus 15:19-21. If you have time, do a bit of research on Miriam and/or read the entire book of Exodus. It is quite the story. It is the main salvific event of the whole Old Testament. And Miriam plays an important role.

See you in worship,

Pastor Tim
